Harold Hand (HH) Linesman retired … presented him with a gift. (He was a Linesman from around 1930 before being Undermanager’s measurer then rejoined Line staff when J Higginbotham became Undermanager in 1972). He never ever bought a pair of pit boots and rummaged through the pile of boots thrown out of the lockers when they were cleaned out in the pit holidays. Didn’t matter if odd sizes or one was a rubber boot !!! He always dyed his hair jet black.
