My ancestors were miners; which mines were in the Denby Ripley/Kilburn area in the 1830's?

Hi,
My ancestors were mining in Derbyshire living in the Denby/Smithy Houses/Street Lane Ripley/Kilburn area from the 1830's up to the late 1890's when they moved on to Nottingham and other places.

I am finding it difficult to come up with any info as to which mines there were in that area, and which they would mostly likely be working in.
Can any one help please?

The family name was Lancashire and there were loads of them in mining.

Thanks Val.

You could try the Local Pits page.  Of those on the page the most likely are:-

  • Loscoe Colliery, Heanor
  • Stanley Pit; ended deep seam mining in 1959 and closed completely in 1961. Seams worked Piper, Low Main Kilburn.

But there are probably a great many smaller pits they could have worked at.

Less Likely due to distance

  • Brinsley Colliery
  • Pye Hill, "Nos. 1 & 2" Alfreton
  • High Park, Eastwood
  • Langton, "Nos. 7 & 9". Originally owned by Pinxton Coke and Co., Pinxton, Alfreton
  • Moorgreen Colliery, Eastwood
  • New London, Eastwood
  • New Selston, Alfreton
  • Pinxton No.1 pit
  • Plumptree, Eastwood
  • Pollington, Alfreton
  • Portland, "Nos. 1, 2, & 4" Kirkby. Originally owned by The Butterley Co., Alfreton
  • New Selston colliery
  • Underwood Pit, Brinsley. It Eventually amalgamated with three other pits sunk   by different mining companies:-
    (i)  Pye Hill, (ii) Selston/Underwood, and (iii) New Selston where-upon it became known as Pye Hill No 1

Help - Making a Documentary Called the Coalfields of North East Derbyshire

Hi there, I am just dropping you a quick line to ask you for your help if you could please offer it. My name is Paul Burdett and I live in Eckington, Derbyshire. I worked at Renishaw Park Colliery from 1982-1989 until it closed. I now run a production company and me and my colleagues are in the process of making a documentary called the Coalfields of North East Derbyshire which is going to be released in early December.

I was wondering if you could help in anyway with photos, or could give us contact details of people on your website in the hope that they could help. We have already interviewed a few ex miners including a couple of survivors of the Markham cage disaster in 1973. We have the NUM on board with this as well as local politicians as they feel it is a story that needs telling of an industry that should never be forgot. We plan to do other films as well about the whole mining area.

I would be very grateful if you could offer any help or put us in contact with anyone who can. This is a link to our website www.compressmedia.com We are also a member of the Institute of Videography which you can click on the institute logo on our website.

Hope to hear from you soon.

My kindest regards

Paul Burdett.

Hi
I am doing my family tree and have found that relatives by the surname of Pomfret may be spelt Pomfrit were a big family and all the males worked down Bradford pit M/c, they lived in Malpas street and Rhodes street.

I wonder if there are any Bradford pit records /documents which still may be in existence which have any information about them.

Bradford pit

I remember the pit when I was a young child in the early 1960's I lived on Cowper Street which was not far away and my dads mothers family all lived on Parker street.

Eastwood Coalmines

Hi Mr Taylor
Thank you for your information on your website about Eastwood Notts. coalmines. You mentioned another website by Nigel Harrison but did not give an address could you please send me that address.

My Hopkin family lived in this area for the last 200 years and were involved in Mining. In a letter from W E Hopkin, who wrote for the paper and was a great friend of D H Lawrence, he said that the family owned shallow mines in the area and I would very much like to find out about them.

If you have any suggestions that would help I would appreciate the information.

Dortha Steele

Nigel Harrison's site appears to have gone.
