JEFFERIES Samuel - 1855 - 03/11/1855 – Age 15 – Haulier. No.1 Pit, George Brain and Co., Bristol, Gloucester. Fall of roof for want of timber. Samuel Bryant, the bailiff, found one of the roof timbers had given way and marked the spot with chalk. He told William Cowles to put in new timbers, but when Jefferies drew up to it, it fell in on him. The workmen strove for over an hour to remove the stuff from the boy. Cowles and his little son had a narrow escape, as they were trapped themselves.
