NEWMAN Stephen - 1851 - 07/06/1851 - Collier. Kingswood, George Brain and Co., Bristol, Gloucester. Drawn over pulley. Nine miners were being hauled up in the cart when the reversing handle of the engine broke off and the men were drawn up at a rapid rate towards the shiver wheel. Several of them leapt to safety, but Stephen Newman miscalculated and fell to the bottom of the pit. 1 killed, 2 injured. The engineer, John Stone, was charged with manslaughter.
