On Thursday morning week about seven o'clock, I went down the pit with the deceased, Thomas Gorton, and two other boys, whose names I do not know. We went down together in the cage. When we arrived at the bottom, East and I set out together to go to the place where we usually stopped. John Whewell and his two drawers, the deceased, Woodhead and Whewell's son, were with us. At Whewell's request, East went for some candles for him, the way he took was in the direction of the place where out work lay. He took his tub along with him, and a naked lighted candle. Almost immediately East had gone, I heard a loud crack, and saw a blaze coming along the roof of the pit. I lay myself down to save myself. In two or three moments, I rose and called out to East. He said he was coming, but added "Oh dear I shall die". The jury retired, and in about a quarter of an hour returned to court, and having answered their names, the foreman said they had come to a unanimous verdict of "Manslaughter against William Holden, the underlooker" and recommended that Messrs Simpson and Young in future use the Davy lamps in the pit. William Holden was then committed to Kirkdale jail for trial at the next Liverpool assizes. (Blackburn Tones) 2 killed.
